Anti-Trafficking Organizations Alert Financial Hold Might Enable Modern Slavery

An alliance of 74 religious, legal, and support groups across the nation has expressed concerns regarding the withholding of eighty-eight million dollars in federal funding earmarked for survivors of human trafficking.

Support Systems in Jeopardy

As stated in a collective communication, the US Department of Justice has halted funding for more than 100 service providers that aid survivors escape their traffickers and obtain necessary resources including emergency shelter, therapy, and personalized care.

"Permitting this money to be cut would allow exploitation to flourish and endanger victims," the letter states. "Many regions will be without their sole assistance organization, stranding victims with no safe emergency housing."

Urgent Request

The alliance is urging legislators to push the federal government to release the financial support to protect thousands of trafficking survivors across the country.

This appeal comes after findings that the national leadership has reduced efforts to combat modern slavery, though officials dispute any withdrawal on human rights policies.

Impact on Communities

  • Numerous service organizations had their resources cut effective the end of last month.
  • Lacking financial support, survivors may go without to lifesaving services including temporary accommodation, therapy, and legal aid.
  • Criminals could act without fear, making communities less safe.

Official Statement

In response to concerns over the delayed allocation, the department indicated that public dollars would be spent eventually, but emphasized that former beneficiaries wouldn’t necessarily get financial support in the coming years.

Upcoming allocations will be decided in accordance with the leadership's goals, the department said.

Longstanding Backing

The communication further notes that the legislative branch has repeatedly approved to maintain such initiatives over the previous decades, emphasizing the critical importance of adequately resourcing lifesaving programs to assist individuals and stop further abuse.
