Boston's Leader Mayor Wu Responds to Trump's Threat to Relocate World Cup Games from Boston
Boston's mayor, Mayor Wu, implied that the city was ready for a dispute with US President Donald Trump regarding his assertion that he could instruct FIFA to remove World Cup games from the stadium in Foxborough, located approximately 35 kilometers south-west of Boston.
Wu spoke on a Boston-based podcast recently to respond to comments from the Trump administration, which had labeled her as "radical left." Trump had threatened that he would contact the head of FIFA if Boston did not "address its issues."
A great deal of it is secured by agreement so that no single person, even if they live in the White House, can reverse it.
She continued, "We're in a world where for attention, for control, for pushing the boundaries ... ongoing threats ... are issued at individuals and communities who refuse to back down and comply or be obedient to a divisive plan."
Mayor Wu further stated, "We will keep being who we are, and that means, sadly, we are going to be part of a discussion that is challenging what Boston stands for." She finished by emphasizing her support for the city, declaring, "Fully committed for Boston."
Trump's Comments and FIFA's Role
Earlier this week, FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen alongside President Trump at the international summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. The FIFA president has also been to the White House and given World Cup tournament and club championship trophies to Trump as presents.
Earlier, President Trump was asked about unrest in South Boston that included a police vehicle being set on fire. Trump replied, "If somebody is doing a bad job, and if I feel there's unsafe conditions, I would call Infantino – the head of the organization, who's great."
Trump continued, "I would say: 'Let's move into another location' and they would do that. He might not prefer it. But he would do it very easily." The president also specifically targeted Wu, stating, "Their mayor is not good ... she's far-left, and they're dominating parts of Boston. That's a strong claim, right?"
Past Threats and Upcoming Tournament Details
Trump has made previous comments that he would take the similar discussion with Infantino about moving games from other host cities, which are among the 16 locations across North America.
The United States is co-hosting the 2026 tournament with Mexico and Canada. The 48-team event is planned to be held from June 11 to July 19 in the coming year.
