This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Here's a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together marks the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, the two stars infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying horror experience, interspersing bits of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his social circle. He fears the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that are inherent in long-term unions a decade in. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a strong argument for remaining unattached. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can experience today.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
